Dermal Fillers & The Love Island Effect

Reality shows like Love Island continuously try to promote a so-called idealised image of men and women. Women, in particular, are portrayed with flat stomachs, a well-defined jawline, high cheekbones, plump lips and smooth skin when this isn’t realistic for most women.

There are two reactions we see when shows like this come onto our screens – “I want to look like that” and “I would never get treatment as I don’t want to look like that”, we’re here to talk you through what is wrong with both of those statements.

This article is not to say that Love Island and shows alike are not a great source of entertainment and escapism – they are! However, it’s important to be aware of the truth behind facial aesthetics treatments to achieve the best and safe results.

“I want to look like that”

Seeing beautiful women on TV at 9 pm every night can cause serious harm to our self-confidence, especially when the treatments they have quite obviously received are not openly declared or discussed on the show. In some cases, it can lead to body dysmorphic syndromes, particularly in young women, who then go on to seek happiness in making themselves look like one of these clones rather than celebrating their individual beauty.

One of the more worrying factors of this ‘Love Island effect’ is those who look for a quick, cheap fix to look like these women on TV without properly researching the treatments they receive or the practitioners that provide them. After the show is aired each year, the industry sees a spike in requests for lip fillers, 2018 in particular saw a 200% increase in demand.

Dermal fillers, lip fillers, and other aesthetic treatments are not designed to completely alter your appearance. They should be used to enhance your natural features, refreshing your look whilst still looking like you. ALWAYS make sure you thoroughly research your available options before making a decision, make sure you have a consultation before treatment to discuss your desires from the treatment, and, most importantly, only visit a medically qualified practitioner who follows best practice advice. “I would never get treatment as I don’t want to look like that”

Shows like Love Island can often end up giving a bad reputation to injectable treatments like dermal fillers and lip fillers, and it’s easy to see why. Each woman on the show, and multiple other reality shows, Instagram influencers and so on, essentially end up looking the same as they receive treatments seemingly from a one-stop cookie-cutter mould, that aren’t tailored to their individual features.

This could not be further away from the experience for patients here at Cosmetier. We use dermal fillers and other injectables to ONLY enhance and refresh your appearance whilst maintaining a natural look with just a subtle difference. We love hearing reviews from patients saying they’ve been told they look well without anybody being able to put their finger on why that is!

As you age, the supporting structures of your face shrink which causes your skin to sag and wrinkles to appear. This can cause many women to, understandably, look for options to regain their youthful appearance and boost their self-confidence. We offer several treatment options that are ideal for ageing skin, including dermal fillers, HydraFacial, Profhilo and anti-wrinkle injections. Take a look here to determine whether dermal fillers could help you.
